According to founder Dr. Reynaldo Anderson, The Black Speculative Arts Movement is defined as follows:

BSAM is an umbrella term represented for different positions or basis of inquiry – Afrofuturism, Astro Blackness, Afro-Surrealism, Ethno Gothic, Black Digital Humanities, Black (Afro-future female or African Centered) Science Fiction, The Black Fantastic, Magical Realism, and The Esoteric.

Recently, Hear 2 Help attended the BSAM Toronto 2018 event held at the Lillan H. Smith Library here in downtown Toronto.

We were very excited to attend this year, as we was one of the event sponsors.

So we arrived just in time for the Expanding Black Thought Project Presentation, where SciCommTO and BSAM brought together scientists and afrofuturistic artists together to discuss their experiences/barriers within their fields. They explained how artists and scientists were paired together over a period of 2 months and came up with some pretty cool designs.

Next, the fine folks from Suga Cayne Designs presented a workshop called the Inkwell Project. They discussed Cosplay, Afrofuturism and Technology in Carnival Mas.

The last part of the event consisted of a round table discussion titled Moving Forward Together. The panelists were: Dr. Reynaldo Anderson, Thandiwe Chimurenga of AAPRP, Asante Massawa of NubiaMancy, Queen Kukoyi of Stolen from Africa, Borelson, and Kmesha Maloney.

Some wonderful points were brought up by all panelists, culminating a successful event.

On the second half of our show, Simone and I got our viewers caught up with the newest Avengers Cartoon, Black Panther’s Quest set to come out September 23rd.

This time around, we find a sleek T’Challa having to defend his loyalties between his homeland of Wakanda and being a member of the Avengers.

Lead writer, Geoff Thorne promises an explosive season filled with surprises galore.
