Remaining open to new information keeps me relevant and more effective for my clients. Maintaining professional competency is an important aspect in my career choice. Ongoing self-assessments are important in order to keep me from burning out or misguiding my patient. I continue to face my personal beliefs, in the attempt to separate them from the beliefs of my patients. It is easy to become stuck in what you believe; you begin to forsake the thoughts and beliefs of others especially if they do not coincide with ours. As community workers, we cannot do this.
It is important to participate and collaborate with as many of your colleagues as you can. Life is about perspective; at times we can hold on to our own perspectives to tightly. In doing so, we lose out on lessons that could benefit our clients. I have realized that as a community worker, it is not about me and what I know; it is remaining open and continuing to learn for my client’s sake.
I hope to provide encouragement to those who work in the community. It is a job that goes unnoticed sometimes. There are many super hero’s and heroines who go unnoticed. I NOTICE YOU! I respect those who take the time to do something outside of themselves for the greater good. I am noticing that this trend is growing and I encourage those who are not actively involved in your community, find a way to do so. The feeling of doing for others is one of the greatest gifts.
