Welcome to another week of Hear 2 Help You.
This week’s show featured creative writer, storyteller, Art Educator & Spoken Word Artist, Ms. Gloria O’koye. A remarkable young woman, who has developed strength beyond her years.
I was so excited to speak to her for a few reasons. Primarily, to hear how her creative outlet has shaped this multi-faceted woman into whom I see before me. To listen to Gloria speak with conviction, wisdom and a bit of shyness was a treat. Getting her to smile with a few light-hearted questions, especially considering her ethnicity was simply amusing.
She’s actually Nigerian and Chinese.
However, what really took the cake for me, and hopefully for you, was having Gloria do a reading for us from her book “A Kintsugi Memoir”.
If no one has heard of Kintsugi before,
it’s defined as the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold coloured lacquer.
The philosophy behind the art, is that by repairing the dismantled ceramics, it gives them a new lease on life, scars and and all. In fact, it’s the broken pieces, or scars that give the items it’s renewed value.
Like shattered pieces now assembled into a new form, Gloria O’koye has been able to do the same. Forging a new identity, one that no longer accepts the old ways of thinking. But by becoming a “Voice of the voiceless“, “Equipping people at-risk with tools to express their emotions and life experiences to prevent tragedies.”

[Editor’s Note:] I ain’t gonna lie… Hearing her speak in Cantonese was a trip. You should see the look on my face when she does it. I know right, priceless. LOL.
